Electricians and asbestos exposure

Electricians are at particular risk around asbestos because their work takes them into the exact spots where it tends to hide — ceiling spaces, wall cavities, behind switchboards and meter boards in older buildings.

1

Why the risk is high

Running cabling, cutting access holes and working in roof and wall spaces all disturb building materials. In a pre-1990 building, those materials may contain asbestos — so routine electrical work can release fibres without the tradesperson realising.

2

How to work safely

Treat unknown materials in older buildings as potentially asbestos until proven otherwise. Don't drill or cut suspect materials without checking first. Where there's doubt, have the material tested — on-site screening can give a fast answer before work proceeds.
