Asbestos removal mistakes to avoid

There's still plenty of asbestos in Australian buildings, so knowing how to handle it — and what not to do — matters. Here are the most common and most dangerous mistakes people make.

1

Attempting DIY removal

The biggest mistake is trying to remove asbestos yourself. There are legal limits on what an unlicensed person can remove, and the health risks of getting it wrong are serious. Always get a professional opinion, and for anything beyond the smallest bonded job, let a licensed remover handle it.

2

Disturbing material that's intact

Asbestos that's in good condition and undisturbed is generally low risk. Breaking, sanding or drilling it is what creates the hazard. If it doesn't need to be disturbed, the safest option is often to leave it in place or seal it rather than rip it out.

3

Improper disposal

Asbestos waste can't go in general rubbish — it must go to a facility licensed to accept it, and illegal dumping carries heavy penalties. Licensed removal includes proper transport and disposal using authorised facilities, so it's handled correctly.
