Asbestos cheat sheet

A quick reference on asbestos: what it is, why it matters, and the simple rules for staying safe around it.

1

What it is

Asbestos is a naturally occurring fibrous mineral that was mined, imported and used widely in Australian construction for its durability and fire resistance. When asbestos-containing products are broken, fibres can be released into the air and inhaled.

2

The dos

Do assume any pre-1990 building could contain asbestos. Do get suspect materials tested before disturbing them. Do leave intact, undisturbed material alone. Do use licensed professionals for testing and removal.

3

The don'ts

Don't sand, cut, drill or break suspect materials. Don't attempt removal beyond what an unlicensed person is legally allowed to do. Don't put asbestos waste in general rubbish. Don't ignore deteriorating material — get advice.
