Renovating an older home? Read this first

Renovation is one of the most common ways people accidentally disturb asbestos. Cutting, drilling, sanding or demolishing old materials can release fibres — so if your home predates the late 1980s, a few checks before you start can keep everyone safe.

1

Check before you start

Before any work that breaks into walls, floors, ceilings or roofing, find out whether asbestos is present. A pre-renovation inspection identifies asbestos-containing materials across the property so you know exactly what you're dealing with — and can plan around it instead of discovering it mid-demolition.

2

Don't disturb suspect materials

If you suspect a material contains asbestos, don't sand, cut, drill or break it. Disturbing it is what releases fibres. Leave it intact until it's been tested and, if needed, removed by a licensed professional.

3

Plan removal into the job

If asbestos is found where you're working, factor licensed removal into your renovation timeline. We can remove it safely, dispose of it properly, and provide a clearance certificate so the area is confirmed safe before trades move back in.
